The school year in Indiana starts earlier than most other states. The opening day varies from Indianapolis to Muncie to Anderson, but by the time you read this, it's safe to say you're sharing the road with school buses, and waiting as the crossing guards shepherd their charges safely across the streets. And oh yes, don't forget the extra traffic on the road as parents drop off their kids. All this is to say, drivers have to be vigilant this time of year, and their cars need to be able, as the old saying goes, stop on a dime. Why schedule a Safety Inspection/Brake Inspection?
The best way to look at a safety inspection/brake inspection is that it will give you peace of mind regarding your safety, as well as that of your family and anyone else who rides in or drives your car. You can also consider it a public service act as far as the drivers with whom you share the road. Police officers in many parts of the country are authorized to stop you if they have reasonable cause to suspect that your car is unsafe or lacking proper equipment.
What Is a Safety/Brake Inspection
A safety inspection/brake inspection is different from the state-required emissions testing that your car has to undergo every two years (even-numbered years for even-numbered license plates, and odd-numbered years for odd-numbered plates). When you get a safety/brake inspection, an automotive technician will follow a checklist and inspect the following:
- Headlights, tail-lights, turn signals, hazard lights, marker lights, brake, and reverse lights, and license plate lights - all of which should be in working order
- Windshield for any cracks or pitting that obstruct the driver's view
- Mirrors to make sure none are cracked, broken, or missing
- Tires for a minimum depth of 1/32" tread
- Wipers to make sure they neither streak nor chatter and that the spray from the washer fluid jets is sufficient to clean the windshield
- Seatbelts to make sure they latch, retract, auto-lock, and are not frayed
- Suspension to check for signs of leaks
- Horn operation
- Steering system
As far as the brakes are concerned, they will fail the safety inspection if there is any metal to metal contact between the shoes, drums, or rotors; if there are any brake fluid leaks; if the brake pedal travels more than halfway to the floor; or if the booster is inactive.
