Your brakes are arguably the most important part of your car. While your vehicle may have a number of advanced safety systems, without good brakes, you’re putting yourself in jeopardy every time you drive. This is why it pays to have a basic idea of how your braking system works, including key parts like the rotors. It’s also important to know when you may need a rotor replacement

What are Brake Rotors?

There are two discs that are connected to the wheels on both sides, and these are the rotors. It is their job to create the right amount of friction to slow and stop a vehicle. They do this when the brakes are applied and the calipers squeeze the brake pads together.

How Long Do Rotors Last?

The more you drive, the more strain is put on your braking system and all of its parts. Rotors wear down over time and will need to be replaced. Generally, rotors are good for about 60,000 miles.

Rotor Warning Signs

In most cases, when your brakes are having some issues, you’ll be able to tell pretty quickly. If the car veers left or right or the steering wheel shakes when you apply the brakes, these are clear indications of a problem.

Another warning sign is a grinding or metallic squeaking sound when braking.

Your Rotor Options

There are two things you can do with worn-down rotors. If they are in poor condition, they’ll probably need to be replaced.

However, if they are still in reasonably good shape, resurfacing could be an option. This aims to restore them to a flat and pristine condition.

You never want to toy around with your brakes. To have your system looked at, just schedule an appointment with the service center at Tom Wood Honda near Carmel.
