How Shocks & Struts Work

The suspension system on your vehicle is made up of a number of critical components that are under heavy stress during normal operation. Among these many components are a set of springs that absorb bumps and shocks as you travel down the road. When these springs are in good condition, you enjoy a smooth and comfortable ride, and your car or truck is spared huge amounts of unnecessary wear and tear.

The Risks of Poorly Maintained Shocks and Struts

If your shocks and struts -and especially the internal springs that make them function properly- are not well-maintained and fall into poor condition, it could lead to a dangerous situation. If you were to drive over a deep pothole or other major bump or sharp dip, old or poorly maintained shocks and struts can cause one or more wheels to lose contact with the road. This means you could temporarily lose control of the vehicle. Also, shocks and struts that are in poor condition, and have become stiff, can allow the road to do tremendous amounts of damage to the frame of your vehicle or other critical parts. Sudden damage to your frame or other parts can be catastrophic to the health of your Honda car or truck, and can even render it completely beyond repair.

Symptoms of Unhealthy Shocks & Struts

You should schedule regular inspection and maintenance to ensure that your shocks and struts are in good condition. However, if your shocks or your struts are not in good condition, there are a few telltale signs that can alert you to the problem. They include:

  • Excessive bouncing of the vehicle
  • The front end of the vehicle dips, especially when you come to a stop
  • Your vehicle sways or leans when moving through corners or when changing lanes
  • Insufficient bounce makes the ride less smooth, the ride seems stiff
  • Poor steering response or you hear a noise when steering
  • The vehicle feels unstable at high speeds

If you detect any of these signs, you should bring your vehicle in for an emergency inspection as soon as possible.
