It's one of the ultimate tropes in science fiction: cars that drive (or maybe even fly!) all by themselves. While we may be a little ways away from flying cars, self-driving cars are much closer than you might initially think. Imagine the possibilities: rather than sitting in traffic for hours on end, doing nothing but getting irritated at the drivers around you, you could be using that time to catch up on work, maybe crack open a book, or watch a movie! Think of all the time you spend sitting in traffic and what you'd rather be doing with it, and it's easy to see why self-driving cars are the next big thing in automotive engineering.
Of course, seeing why self-driving cars would be awesome and making them a reality are two different things. And while the computer technology is there to make it happen, experts are finding that testing the cars can prove difficult. They aren't safe enough to just unleash onto the open road, so how can engineers test them in a situation that's much more lifelike than a closed course? Well, as always, the folks at Honda found a way, by turning a former naval base into a testing ground for their self-driving car. This five-acre ghost town features over 20 miles of real-world roads, meaning that it's the perfect spot for the engineers to see their car in action without risking harm to anyone or their property.
It's a really clever idea--but that's no surprise, as Honda always seems to have tricks up their sleeve. So, it may still be a few years before any self-driving cars find their way to our Honda dealership in Anderson, IN, but in the meantime we do have plenty of new and used Honda vehicles for you to check out. While you'll love driving your new 2016 Honda Civic home, in a few years, who knows? Maybe it will be driving you home!
