Ever since the introduction of VTEC (Variable Timing and Lift Electronic Control) in the mid-80s (1990 for the U.S. market), Honda has been focused on producing high-revving, naturally aspirated engines.
But, like most manufacturers, stricter regulations are forcing companies to have higher overall EPA standards, which high-revving engines kill. To keep up with the regulations, Honda is turbocharging its four-cylinder VTEC power units which should make their way to the market by late 2015.
Honda stated that it has invested $340 million in its Anna, Ohio, plant to accommodate a new production line for the turbocharged engines.
Though Honda won't be producing engines with 9,000 RPM limits, turbocharging will be adding the ability to make efficient and fast cars to drive. The new Civic Type R will be one of the first Hondas to see the turbo-four and could possibly be making its way stateside. That would be a welcome change! Regardless, the change to turbocharging Honda's power units means more power with greater efficiency. It's a win-win.
